Discerning vocation to the priesthood in Salt Lake City has been a gift from our Lord Jesus. First, because when I first moved to Utah in a city called Logan I felt a warm welcome from the community in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, and also because in this community I first decided to discern vocation to the priesthood. In addition, friends in the community of St. Thomas Aquinas helped and guided me toward Jesus Christ, which led me to discern a vocation to the priesthood.The second reason is that I was encouraged to continue my education by the vocation director. The advice given to me helped me focus for the first time on myself and my future, which then encouraged me to begin my studies. After gaining my GED and going to public college for two years I was accepted by the diocese and soon after by Mount Angel Seminary, where I am about to finish my second year of philosophy. I have made it this far because I opened my heart to the voice of Jesus, who spoke to me through the vocation director. 
My Jose Santanaadvice to any person, whether they are thinking about discerning for the priesthood or religious life, is to be patient because just as “Jesus the good shepherd” guides his flock according to his will, he knows where he is taking his flock and it’s usually through the safest path. In the same way, if you are feeling called by Jesus the good shepherd, trust in him with faith, hope and love, and allow him to guide you through his ordained ministers, especially by the vocation director. Because in this way God will give you the grace and peace so that you may follow him with the help of the Holy Spirit and be directed toward the place where Jesus has a place for you. 
Finally, if you are afraid to answer to Jesus, keep in mind what he said to his disciples, “‘It is I: Do not be afraid’” (John 6:20).
