On Tuesday, the Holy Father underwent surgery at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. The operation lasted nearly 90 minutes. During the surgery, the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique.
After the removal of the lobe, the surgeons then performed a radical resection. A histological examination was also performed on the removed lobe. This examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. Based on his preoperative examination, this result was expected.
Adenocarcinoma of the lungs is a common and moderately aggressive form of lung cancer. Pope Leo is expected to spend up to a week at the hospital recovering from his surgery. Please keep the Holy Father in your prayers as he recovers from surgery, and we await news of what treatments are to follow.

Bishop Oscar A. Solis mourns the passing of Pamela Atkinson.
With profound sadness, I join all Utahns in mourning the passing of Pamela Atkinson. On behalf of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, I extend my heartfelt sympathy and prayers to her family, friends, colleagues, and the countless people whose lives were touched by her extraordinary generosity, compassion, and love.
Pamela was a remarkable woman whose life was devoted to the service of our vulnerable and struggling brothers and sisters. Working across religious, political, and social differences, she had a remarkable ability to bring people together in pursuit of the common good. Her deep concern for the most vulnerable embodied the Church’s preferential love for the poor and reminded us that a just and caring society is built when we refuse to overlook those who are most in need.
Pamela was also a friend and generous supporter of Catholic Community Services of Utah, helping promote and strengthen its mission of love and service to build communities rooted in compassion and human dignity. For many years, she served as Master of Ceremonies for the CCS Humanitarian Awards Dinner. She was also a familiar and welcome presence at the Bishop Weigand Resource Center, where she supported efforts to care not only for the physical needs of those seeking assistance, but also for their dignity, hope, and spiritual well-being.
We mourn Pamela’s passing with gratitude to God for the gift of her life and with Christian hope in God’s love and mercy. “Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.”
