General Godparent Requirements: (Taken from the 1983 Code of Canon Law Canon 87) 
1.) Church Law allows for a minimum of one godparent and a maximum of two godparents. If there are two, one must be male and the other female. 
2.) Be willing to serve as a godparent. 
3.) Baptized and Confirmed Catholic and at least 16 years of age. 
4.) Must be a practicing Catholic: a regular participant in Sunday Eucharist. 
5.) Registered member of a parish 
6.) A godparent may be an unmarried single person; however, if a godparent is married, he/she needs to be in a sacramental Catholic marriage and not just in a civil marriage or relationship outside of marriage. (A marriage certificate or a letter from the parish where they were married is required.) The godparent cannot be married outside the Church, divorced and remarried without an annulment, or living with a significant other but not married. 
7.) Live a life in harmony with the faith: attending Sunday Mass, receiving the Eucharist, sharing time, talent and treasure. Their role is to help the newly confirmed person grow in his or her understanding and practice of the faith.
8)If godparents come from a different parish or state, they must provide a letter from the parish where they are registered stating the following: They are registered members of that parish, in good standing with the Catholic Church, and the pastor permits them to be sponsors for Confirmation. The letter must be signed by their pastor and include the parish seal.
9)Godparents may be relatives but not parents, spouses, or legal guardians. When the designated godparents are not able to attend the Confirmation and are represented by proxies, then parents, legal guardians, and/or spouses may fill that role.

REQUISITOS GENERALES (Tomado del Código de Derecho Canónico de 1983 Canon 87)
1.) La Ley de la Iglesia permite un mínimo de un padrino y un máximo de dos padrinos. Si hay dos, uno debe ser hombre y la otra mujer.
2.) Estar dispuesto a servir como padrino o madrina.
3.) Estar bautizado y confirmado como católico y tener al menos 16 años.
4.) Ser católico practicante: participar regularmente en la Eucaristía dominical.
5.) Miembro inscrito de una parroquia
6.) Un padrino puede ser una persona soltera no casada; sin embargo, si un padrino está casado, él/ella necesita estar en un matrimonio católico sacramental y no sólo en un matrimonio civil o relación fuera del matrimonio. (Se requiere un certificado de matrimonio o una carta de la parroquia donde se casaron). El padrino no puede estar casado fuera de la Iglesia, divorciado y vuelto a casar sin anulación, o viviendo con otra persona, pero no casado.
7.) Vivir una vida en armonía con la fe: asistir a la Misa dominical, recibir la Eucaristía, compartir tiempo, talento y tesoro. Su papel es ayudar a la persona recién confirmada a crecer en su comprensión y práctica de la fe.
8.) Si los padrinos vienen de una parroquia o estado diferente, deben proveer una carta de la parroquia donde están registrados declarando lo siguiente: Son miembros registrados de esa parroquia, en buen estado con la Iglesia Católica, y el párroco les permite ser padrinos para la Confirmación. La carta debe estar firmada por el párroco e incluir el sello de la parroquia.
9.) Los padrinos pueden ser familiares, pero no padres, cónyuges o tutores legales. Cuando los padrinos designados no pueden asistir a la Confirmación y son representados por apoderados, entonces los padres, tutores legales, y/o cónyuges pueden desempeñar ese papel.
